Best Experimental Film Curation: The Red Room

425 E. 31st St., (410) 243-6888,

With a name suggesting a Lynchian nightclub on another plane of existence, The Red Room sits at the back of Normals like some unlocked part of the unconscious. Baltimore filmmaker/curator Margaret Rorison programs some genuinely experimental films with the artists on hand to help the audience sort through it. One of our favorites was Fern Silva, who brought a horde of 16mm collages, like “Wayward Fronds,” which traced the Everglades from its recent abandonment by state government back to shots from “The Creature from the Black Lagoon,” which was filmed around there, with a mosaic of clips in as much disrepair as the swamplands themselves.
