Best Company: Annex Theater

Experimental theater championed by companies like Annex often veers toward niche audiences, but this year, Annex reached new viewers and projected a range of compelling voices. After moving from Station North to the Psychic Readings space in the Bromo Arts District last year, Annex staged not only this year’s Best Play, but a lengthy season that had something for just about everyone willing to step into the unknown. With six full productions and two short-run commissioned “Knee Plays,” it seemed like the team led by Artistic Director Evan Moritz and Managing Director Frederick Gerriets was constantly running around reconfiguring the interior of the Psychic Readings space, directing strong ensemble casts, and piecing together fresh theater. Diving headfirst into history’s darkest holes, the daunting beauty of science, wicked magic, and reinterpreted classic literature, Annex clawed its way into corners of our minds we’d forgotten or neglected.
