Best Character Actor: Dave Iden

Just think of this Annex company member as underground Baltimore theater’s Jesse Plemons. The compact, red-headed Iden never portrayed a main character over the 2015-16 season but what he did with his small parts was even better. It didn’t matter if he was a nervous scientist in “The Lord of Flies,” an anxiously talkative Square (literally, like the shape) in “Flatland,” or a caterwauling, white indentured servant in “Insurrection: Holding History,” Iden made the most of his brief stage time. His subtle characterizations were surprising, precise, and integral to realizing the odd, whimsical, and imaginative worlds Annex’s plays were aiming to conjure.
