Like most of the businesses in Hampden, Charlotte Elliott is an odd bird. It’s one part tchotchkes shop and one part amazing used bookstore. We’ve bypassed Charlotte Elliott numerous times without ever stopping in. But man, are we glad we finally did. The left side of the shop has a pretty extensive used-book collection that rivals Normals Books and Records in Abell. The section that really caught our eye was the arts section with usually-expensive oversized monographs going for a pretty reasonable price. Charlotte Elliott is one of the last—if not the last—used bookstores on Hampden’s busy 36th Street, which is sad because there used to be five or six. Take a break from Amazon and eBay and shop locally here instead.
