Best Programming: Open Space

In 2013 we awarded Open Space Best Phoenix for persevering despite a fire that destroyed its members’ home and project/gallery space in Remington. After the fire, they kept on, and a little more than a year later they organized the first Alternative Art Fair at Artscape, where the drunken masses could scratch their head at and/or enjoy some contemporary art. Since signing a lease on West Franklin Street last fall, Open Space has gotten back into putting up a number of great shows, in addition to its annual Publications and Multiples Fair (this year’s was arguably the best PMF yet. Sorry, wallet), and the second artist-run art fair at Artscape. Its programming—which has been consistently strong, and has been getting bigger without sacrificing quality—is a testament to the value of an artist-run collective’s labor of love.
