Best Pepper: Chile Comapeño

Available at the Fells Point Farmers Market and other pop-up locations,

Baltimore is lucky to claim Joao and Renee Noroña, who have been importing the comapeño, a rare Mexican chili pepper, to town for a few years now. The couple sets up a stall on the regular at the Fells Point Farmers Market, where you can buy the fantastically spicy comapeño in various forms: dried and crushed, dried and whole, in a salsa, and in apricot jam. What’s special about this orange-red pod is not its heat (though that’s great, too)—it’s the distinctive, robust flavor of a hard-to-harvest chili.
