Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s snafu followed by a formal apology for calling Baltimore City protesters “thugs” highlighted one of the city’s most pressing problem: the disconnect between city leadership and Baltimore’s struggling populace needs to be repaired. Destroying property and stealing is wrong, agreed. And the mayor was speaking out of frustration for the city she loves. We always wonder though, when a politician opens their mouth, who are they speaking for? In this failing, late-capitalistic system of corruption, if politicians don’t overtly say who they are speaking for then we assume they’re speaking for the wealthy . . . like they always have.
