Best Loser: Anthony Brown

Many of us in Maryland used to feel a sense of pride and security knowing that we lived in one of the nation’s most reliably blue states. We felt so secure, it seems, that most of us didn’t bother to vote last year. And so we now have to deal with the disastrous consequences of four years living under Boss Hög, who beat former Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown by 76,596 votes. That might seem like a lot, but bear in mind that Baltimore City has a population of more than 600,000 people, and only 35.3 percent of them turned out to vote—the lowest rate in the state. Did we really think Brown was a gubernatorial shoo-in who would continue the O’Malley dynasty? Or did his utterly bland campaign and seemingly nonexistent media presence/personality fail to remind enough liberals that he even existed? Whatever the reason, we’re pissed.
