Best Gallery: Guest Spot at the Reinstitute

1715 N. Calvert St., (718) 541-9672,

Rod Malin’s curatorial eye has been a welcome addition to the city since he started exhibiting artists in his Fells Point home in 2011, but ever since moving to his current location on Calvert Street in 2012, he’s not only broadened the variety of work and artists that he spotlights but also allowed the gallery to evolve into an intellectual and creative hub. In the past year Guest Spot has housed arresting solo shows from Terence Hannum and conceptual group shows such as “Read the Recap, Skip the Show,” and has also opened its doors to artist-run art fairs, film screenings, and discussions on gentrification and the politics of the artist-run space. The space consistently explores how artists and the communities they call home interact and evolve, particularly outside the conventional channels that support the art market’s exclusionary economics.
