Best Fuel to the Fire: Riot gear

As the protests over Freddie Gray’s death mounted, peacefully, along Pennsylvania Avenue and around the Western District police station, cops in uniform, with vests, then shields, formed strong lines on Jersey barriers. The shields were in short supply, we later learned from the sometimes-desperate emails of police seeking to gear up a week later in the face of people throwing rocks and bottles, setting fires, and smashing store windows. But in the early going, before all that, the shields and the lines and the helmets protecting the cops gave them a sinister look, and they sometimes moved aggressively into the crowd and even tackled a few journalists, including CP Photo Editor J.M. Giordano.
