Best Film Series: Charles Revival Series

Since the 1990s, projectionist John Standiford has painstakingly curated a series that runs every season with a diverse group of films whose usually triweekly runs showcase the beauty of original film prints, and finds room for, say, Orson Welles following a week of Hayao Miyazaki screenings. Often the screenings showcase Baltimore film history as well: This summer’s “Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise” features concert footage from the now-defunct Famous Ballroom before it housed part of the Charles and hometown hero John Waters usually receives a slot in the series. Plus, it smooths over the theater’s relationship with cinephiles when the regular film releases tend to be NPR-friendly junk.
