Before this year, we had never heard of the music of ’70s gay glam rocker Smokey. Most people hadn’t—his glam-y garage rock songs about gay culture had mostly been lost to time. Thanks to a re-release by an indie label in Australia called Chapter Music, Smokey, aka Baltimore native John Condon, got some long-overdue coverage and recognition. Smokey’s songs about gay lovers, leather bars, and water sports (“I wanna, I wanna, I wanna be your toilet”) felt fresh, relevant, and also ahead of their time after decades hidden in the rough. Better late than never, right? And hey, we talked with Condon for our Queer Issue and he sent over a signed CD as thanks. Turns out he’s quite a mensch too.
