Best Bizarre Product Placement: Geico Fly-overs at Freddie Gray protests

n April 25, thousands of protesters poured into War Memorial Plaza to protest Freddie Gray’s death in police custody, they were met with hordes of local and national reporters, dozens of police lined up in front of City Hall, and—wait a minute, is that a Geico plane?? “Save Money,” read the giant yellow banner being pulled by a small plane circling the protest, along with the Geico logo and British-accented gecko. Amid all the passion and tension of that day, the site of the ad banner, more typically seen above, say Preakness or Ocean City, was a bizarre spectacle and perhaps a reminder of how thoroughly commerce and advertising are ingrained in our lives.
