Best Anchor: Denise Koch

During the uprising, the national news and the local news outlets were quick to panic. Every building on fire was part of the “riots” (they weren’t) and was shown on endless loops across the world. Over on WJZ, veteran anchor Denise Koch was holding it down like a boss. Koch was calling for calm and encouraging the reporters on the street to keep away from hyperbole and stick to the facts. When “widespread looting” was reported, Koch asked the reporter to refrain from using words like “widespread,” as they didn’t know how prevalent the looting was, and her understanding of the city’s geography was unsurpassed. During a crisis, Koch is exactly the kind of anchor we need: She’s cool-headed, loves the city and its people, and cares enough to get the story straight without panicking.
