Though it only ran for several months at the start of the year, 2656miles touched on an issue that affects every neighborhood in this city: zoning laws. You see, a family medicine resident, Peter Burkill, bought a building that used to be a corner store with the hopes of opening a coffee shop and bakery, and little did he know that Baltimore’s code is regressive and wrongheaded. So he started a blog documenting his plans and the fight to get the laws changed. In doing so, he also learned about the history of the property and zoning law in Baltimore and started a petition drive. Burkill’s last post was in April, and it is our hope this award spurs him on to keep fighting the good fight.
