Best Up-and-Coming Neighborhood

City Paper

Waverly made the news this summer with the terrible drive-by shooting that took the life of 3-year-old McKenzie Elliot, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to love about this warm and friendly neighborhood that boasts an active civic association, a much-loved year-round farmer’s market, an excellent YMCA, and some really outstanding architecture, including classic row homes and free-standing old Victorians. Elliot’s death was a reminder of the ongoing struggles with crime and gangs in this area, but also of the power of neighborhoods as people poured into the streets to show their support for Elliot’s family and heeded the call of one resident to “take back our porches!” People who live in Waverly love it, and they are fighting to keep it home.
