Best New Suburb

City Paper

You’re driving around an endless parking lot and pass the following: Target, AT&T, Chick-fil-A, Old Navy, Harris Teeter, Red Robin, Michaels, Hair Cuttery, Outback Steakhouse, Five Guys, Panera Bread, Chipotle—to name a few—and you think to yourself, “Towson, right?” Nope. Welcome to Canton, circa 2014, the best suburb that’s not “officially” a suburb. Starting with the Brewers’ Hill redevelopment (including the old National Bohemian Brewery) and capped off by the completion of The Shops at Canton Crossing and what seems like 5 billion brand-new luxury apartments and condos, the neighborhood has finally completed its metamorphosis from a uniquely blue-collar urban neighborhood to “OMG, TARGET!!!” gentrified sameness. Hell, the busiest place to get breakfast is even named Towson Hot Bagels.
