Fronted by Katrina Ford of Celebration and backed by the members of Big In Japan (bassist Ed Harris, keyboardist Matt Pierce, guitarist Woody Ranere, and drummer Mike Lowry) this art-rock quintet released a self-titled EP that combines post-rock atmospheric with experimental pop and played a few shows. And that makes Mt. Royal a supergroup worth praising: It didn’t play up its super-ness. But for Baltimore music nerds who know their history, this is an impressive group whose members reach deep into the scene and into Baltimore underground rock history. Lowry is a touring drummer for Future Islands, Pierce is in Arbouretum, and all four Big In Japan players were formerly of the seminal local band Lake Trout.
