Best Solo Show

Last October, local artist Laura Amussen staged her first solo show in nearly a decade, and it hit the eyes like a knockout punch. Amussen’s sculptural installations and photographs candidly explored relationships as a flotation device—some help you survive life’s choppy seas, some weigh you down. Individual pieces often simmered with volatile emotions that made them difficult to ponder, chiefly because they so instantly recalled feeling trapped by someone whose dysfunctional idea of love feels like he or she is actively trying to drown you.
