Annex Theater, 1 W. North Ave.,

Peter Weiss’ “Marat/Sade” is an intimately febrile Chinese box of a play about an unhinged people talking about man’s unhinged nature. Under the co-direction of Philip Doccolo and Sarah Heiderman, Annex’s “Marat/Sade” turns this ticking political time-bomb into a wonderfully uncomfortable affront. The play dramatizes the assassination of a French revolutionary as staged by asylum lunatics under the guidance of a debauched libertine, but the indelible potency of this daring production is how it suggests that the line between insanity and so-called “freedom” is thin to nonexistent.
