Boister, the chamber-pop ensemble led by composer/arranger/keyboardist Anne Watts, has two primary channels of expression: the instrumental music she writes for silent films and the songs she writes for her own voice. Seven of the 10 tracks on the new Boister album, “Your Wound Is Your Crown,” produced by Jawbox’s J. Robbins, boast vocals, but the lyrics are secondary to Watts’ seductive melodies, stately chord progressions, and surprising juxtapositions (bass clarinet against Rhodes piano, trombone against accordion, Latin percussion against psychedelic guitar) that evoke an enveloping soundscape which can stand on its own.
