Best Jazz Composer

City Paper

During his recent hometown gigs in Baltimore, Lafayette Gilchrist has been showcasing his epic work in progress: “The Go-Go Suite.” The pianist is out to prove that the rhythms of Chuck Brown and Washington’s go-go scene—the music of Gilchrist’s childhood—can underpin serious jazz composition as effectively as the swing rhythms of the big-band era. And prove it he does, by spinning subtle variations on the go-go groove in his left hand and by fitting his right hand’s compelling melodies and surprising harmonies snugly in that rhythm.
