Basically, it’s hard not to love anything that includes ‘Mouth of Hell with Angels Playing a Harp, Fiddle, and Organ.’ And when that hellmouth is a stunning illumination that dates from the late 13th century, it’s more metal than Deathfest. As curated by Chiara Valle, the 21 illuminations in the Walters’ “Seeing Music in Medieval Manuscripts” offer a peek into how sound has shaped how we think about, celebrate, and contemplate eternal salvation (or damnation) over the centuries—and it often doesn’t look too far removed from how we do so today.
