Best Club DJ

City Paper

For the second year in a row now, DJ AngelBaby’s “Get Pumped” mixtape series has defined club music as it currently sounds in the city, not as a bunch of blogging boobs in New York or the U.K. working off three-times-removed info about what’s “hot” in the city of “The Wire” see it, but as it really is. And she does it in short, digestible bursts: 40 tracks in less than an hour. AngelBaby also helms the nightly K-Swift tribute mix on 92Q (she’s wisely started uploading them to Soundcloud for free download) and her club sets over Fourth of July weekend on 92Q (especially nearly 30 minutes of Bmore takes on Beyoncé) restored faith in corporate radio still being able to go off the rails from time to time. Pair that with her desire to connect with nearby club cities Philadelphia and Newark, New Jersey, and you have club’s first full-stop ambassador since the tragic death of K-Swift in 2008.
