Murder count exceeds last year's with 134 days to go

The homicide count reached 211 today, which means that on Aug. 19, the 231st day of 2015, Baltimore tied 2014's murder total. The latest victim was a man found in a vacant house on Traction Street in the Penn North neighborhood. He was shot once. Police have not yet released his name. They have not released the names of several recent homicide victims as they reorganize under Interim Commissioner Kevin Davis. Baltimore Police typically doesn't release names until next of kin have been notified, which sometimes takes several days. But there are several that have been pending longer than that, including one from July 31, one from Aug. 2, and one from Aug. 7.

Today's killing was the 24th this month. The city has seen more than one killing per day in May and July. June had 30 days and 30 murders. If the current pace of murders continues, Baltimore will suffer 333 murders by year's end. We will try to get all their names.
