The Baltimore Sun Media Group's free weekly tabloid b will cease publication on Aug. 27, publisher Tim Ryan announced in an email.
Citing overlap with City Paper and The Sun's WKND section, Ryan announced the company will "reposition our resources in order to enhance our portfolio." It's not immediately clear what will happen to b's staff or recurring features. Ryan's full email is below:
In 2008, The Baltimore Sun Media Group launched b as a free daily newspaper targeting the younger and more casual reader. The newspaper served as a competitive brand to the short lived Examiner newspaper. Over the past several years, b has evolved in order to serve the needs of our readers and clients. Though b remains a profitable and engaged brand with a loyal following, it has some overlap in audience and advertiser demand with our City Paper and Sun WKND section. Therefore, we have elected to cease publication of b, with its last scheduled publication date on Aug. 27. This change will also allow us to reposition our resources in order to enhance our portfolio.
I want to thank everyone who played a role in the success of b. Through your efforts, we were able to build a product that served a niche audience and many new advertisers. I hope you are as proud as I am for what b was able to accomplish.
Thank you again and keep up the great work.
