City Paper is sad to announce that senior staff writer Van Smith has decided to leave the paper to pursue other opportunities. His last day will be April 27.
Smith, who got his start as a City Paper intern in 1987, has become an institution of investigative journalism in Baltimore with unparalleled coverage of the shadow economy, the federal courts, local politics, gang and prison culture, the environment, and much more.
After his internship, Smith worked as a freelancer and joined the staff in 1994. He left in late 1998 to work with City Paper founder Russ Smith on his newest paper, The New York Press, but returned to CP in 2002 and has been with the paper ever since.
