We really blew it not spotting this new Abdu Ali video for 'I, Exist' sooner. It's been out for nearly two weeks. From Ali and Schwarz's "Already EP" released over the summer (and one of City Paper's Top Ten Local Albums of 2014), 'I, Exist' is an uncharacteristically calm and melodic song that, back when the EP dropped, we called "fragile and pleasant" and compared to an Aphex Twin composition. The video is appropriately trippy and exploratory. Directed by Johnny Rogers, it's a kind of solarized journey through video game outer space; think '70s New Age stoner space comics like Moebius' "Gardens of Aedena" meets Minecraft and you're close (if you happened to be at the last Kahlon dance party, clips from the video, which hadn't premiered yet, were projected onto the walls).
Ali also has a cassette out, "The Best of Abdu Ali," on Deathbomb Arc Recordings. The cassette, which you can order here for $7, features highlights from Abdu's releases over the past few years ("INVICTOS," "Push + Slay," "Infinite Epiphanies," and "Already") along with an incredible new track, 'Keep Movin (Negro Kai),' a minimal, free-jazz-meets-neo-soul track that recalls the most radical work of Erykah Badu and D'Angelo.
