“Take Me Away to the Stars”

Nov. 5 – Feb. 18, 2017

Often, major media coverage of protests and rallies against police brutality doesn’t dive deep into context or history to explain, in particular, black people’s (justified) anger and weariness of systemic racism and all of its symptoms and byproducts. It is so much to sift through and to process, but local artist Stephen Towns has dedicated his latest body of work to researching and unearthing aspects of one historic moment that is also shrouded in myth: Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. Through drawings, paintings, and quilts, Towns'solo exhibition offers “an avenue to process the violence of American history, and provide a framework on how to navigate and articulate the anger and frustration that continues to exist throughout the nation today.” Opening reception Nov. 5, 3-6 p.m., Galerie Myrtis, 2224 N. Charles St., (410) 235-3711, galeriemyrtis.net, free. (Rebekah Kirkman)
