Kevin Shird's “Uprising In The City”

Oct. 22

Author Kevin Shird—activist, educator, organizer, and author (previously, "Lessons Of Redemption")—comes to Red Emma's to talk about his recent book, "Uprising In The City." Shird mixes his first-person observations during the Baltimore Uprising with his own experiences growing up and adds in thoughts on the ways in which Baltimore could be on the vanguard of change and reform, comparing and contrasting it with similar cities dealing with the same problems. "This was deeper than some kids at Mondawmin throwing some rocks, this was deeper than the whole Freddie Gray matter, this was something that had been brewing here in Baltimore for a long time," Shird told Marc Steiner last month. "I knew [this attitude] wasn't manufactured...there was a deep feeling of something and I wanted to understand what that something was and be able to relay that to the people." 7:30 p.m., Red Emma's, 30 W. North Ave., (443) 602-7585,, free. (Brandon Soderberg)
