Murders this Week: 6; Murders this Year: 224

The city surpassed its 2010 murder count this week after a weekend marked by three murders and multiple shootings, including four people shot near a barber shop on the 1400 block of North Luzerne Avenue on Saturday.

Wednesday, Dec. 11

6:20 p.m. Northwestern District police found Myrus A. Joynes Sr., a 47-year-old African-American man, on the 5200 block of Denmore Avenue in the Arlington neighborhood. He had been shot multiple times and died soon after at an area hospital.

Thursday, Dec. 12

11:55 a.m. Police found Devante Barnes, a 21-year-old African-American man, in the alley at 4500 Fernhill Avenue. He had trauma to the head, and it took a day for the medical examiner to rule it a homicide. Other news outlets reported it was a shooting. Court records show a man named Derrell Byrd, with the same address and birthday as Barnes, used the alias Devante Barnes.

Friday, Dec. 13

3:40 p.m. Western District Police called to the 3500 block of Woodbrook Avenue found Sirreal Scott, a 20-year-old African-American man, shot in a rear alley. He was hospitalized and died the next day. Police later updated the location to 2207 Liberty Heights Avenue, about 400 feet from the initial call. This was the second murder in nine days in the Parkview/Woodbrook neighborhood, near the crux of Reisterstown and Auchenteroly Terrace. James Seals was killed on Dec. 4 on the 2800 block of Parkwood, about six blocks south.

10:45 p.m. Southeastern District officers responded to the 200 block of Aisquith Street for a report of a shooting at Pleasant View Gardens. They found a 22-year-old man suffering from several gunshot wounds to his body. The man, who police had not yet identified at press time, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Sunday, Dec. 15

7:20 p.m. Anthony L. Joyner, a 34-year-old African-American man, was shot in the head and died on his birthday while on the 200 block of Beale Court in the Douglas Homes. Southeastern District police found him there. Medics took him to a hospital, where he died.

Monday, Dec. 16

11:30 a.m. Northwestern District officers responded to the intersection of Nelson and West Belvedere avenues for a shooting. They found a 48-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest. The man was transported to an area hospital, where he died. Investigators believe the victim was shot three blocks away in the 5200 block of Beaufort Avenue. Police did not release the man's name. This murder is the second in the Arlington area in the past five days.
