Murders this Week: 3; Murders this Year: 129

This past weekend was relatively quiet, with no shootings reported over two days. Still, a 16-year-old girl's throat was slashed, and two others were killed by gunfire, while four non-fatal shootings were reported to police.

Monday, July 15

8:58 p.m. An African-American man was shot several times on the 200 block of Diener Place, in the city's Uplands neighborhood. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 9 p.m. The man's name as Montae Higgins, 20 years old.

Tuesday, July 16

9:47 p.m. Police called to the 1600 block of Presstman Street found Moses Lee Rush Jr., an 18-year-old African-American man, lying outside, unresponsive. He had been shot several times in the torso. Rush, who lived on the 500 block of Rappolla Street, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.

Friday, July 19

12:50 a.m. Diamond Williams' family found the 16-year-old African-American girl in a house near the 3100 block of Liberty Heights Avenue. Her throat had been slashed. She died in a hospital less than a half-hour later. According to an account in The Sun, police believe Shaquille Anthony, a 19-year-old African-American man who committed suicide the same night, killed Williams, who was a junior at Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School. She was studying to be a nurse, The Sun reported.
