A Lax Dive

When we visited Rendezvous Lounge (136 W. 25th St., [443] 983-8578) in 2008, we described it as a "stucco-walled landscape that looks and feels like a touristy cantina somewhere in rural New Mexico" (Drinks, June 18, 2008). That still holds, and we can report it's a bit cleaner than when we were there a few years ago. Now, picture this cantina being festooned with lacrosse memorabilia-sticks, helmets, jerseys, old pictures-you name it. The bar's new owner, Ray Harcum, played at Forest Park High School, went to the University of Maryland for football, and has coached at various schools in the city. While the idea of a lacrosse-themed bar in Charles Village may be the ninth circle of hell for many readers, the new-look Rendezvous, now known as Coach's Rendezvous, is a humble little dive and a welcoming place to grab a cheap beer and watch a game. The affable service makes it a standout. Who gets the premium TV treatment if, say, the Hopkins Blue Jays are on at the same time as the Orioles? "The Blue Jays will take the big screen over the Orioles in this bar," says Harcum with a laugh. "And Maryland for sure."
