Protips on curing your hangover

Here at City that Drinks, we believe you shouldn't write about a drink until you've been drunk on it. Because all of those flowery aromas and ancho-pepper undertones don't mean shit if they give you a crushing headache. And since this is the season of crushing headaches, we decided to ask bartenders at a couple Irish pubs what they recommend to cure a debilitating hangover.

Jason Hoylman, who works early on Sundays at Dougherty's during football season, has seen a lot of hangovers. "I've never tried it myself, but there's always the Alcoholics Plus," he says. For this remedy, you take an Alka-Seltzer Plus, mix it with BC Powder, and then take a shot of Jägermeister. "You get two painkillers, the equivalent of two cups of coffee, and some hard liquor," he says. "But most of us these days just get late-night Korean."

Joey Smith, who has served many a hungover brunch at Mick O'Shea's, says to stay away from the beer. "It'll kill your stomach. Drink something hard if you can take it. Bloody marys are good with some food. Then go hit the couch." Smith has been known to push a shot of rye on a heavily hungover writer-and after a rough minute or two, it seemed to work.

We also hear from reliable sources in places where marijuana is now legal that weed is the only true cure for the hangover-but heavy drinking probably won't get you a card for medical marijuana anywhere yet.
