Murders this Week: 3; Murders this Year: 33

Tuesday, March 13

9:07 p.m. Police were called to the 2500 block of Ashland Avenue because gunshots were heard. When they arrived, they were flagged down and directed to the 900 block of North Port Street near Dr. Rayner Browne Elementary School. Timothy Harris, a 47-year-old African-American man, was lying on the ground. He had been shot in the head and died at a nearby hospital at 10:18 p.m. This is the second murder in Milton-Montford this year. The neighborhood is three blocks by three blocks.

Friday, March 16

3:53 p.m. A few blocks north of where Timothy Harris was found, on the other side of the elementary school, police got a call for another serious shooting. Gregory Parker, a 54-year-old African-American man, was at a social club at the corner of Patterson Avenue and Chase Street. He left the club and went up to two vendors selling goods on the street. As he attempted to pay for some items, a man in a green hoodie approached and shot at Parker. Parker fell and the gunman stood over him and continued firing, hitting Parker repeatedly in the body. The gunman ran north on Bradford Street and east on Biddle Street. Parker died at a city hospital at 4:32 p.m. Eight people have been murdered in the Eastern police district this year, making it the most murderous police district in the city despite being the smallest.

9:05 p.m. That night, Fareed Caldwell, a 25-year-old African-American man, was shot several times in the 3500 block of Belvedere Avenue near Pimlico Race Course. He died at a local hospital at 11:38 p.m.

Donta Matthews, a 22-year-old African-American man, was convicted on March 12 of murdering Darnell Gray, a 35-year-old African-American man. Gray was in the back seat of an SUV in the 700 block of Bartlett Avenue on Dec. 16, 2009, when two men started shooting at the car. The driver sped up to get away from the gunfire, but Gray was hit in the right armpit and left knee and died. No one else in the car was shot. Matthews’ co-defendant, Thomas Carter, a 20-year-old African-American man, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and carrying a handgun on March 2 and was sentenced to three years in prison. Matthews has not yet been sentenced.

Dearius Forrester, a 23-year-old African-American man, was arrested on March 13 for the murder of Rodney Gardner, a 21-year-old African-American man. Gardner was shot at the intersection of Ravenwood Avenue and Belair Road on Jan. 8, 2007. Forrester was 18 at the time of the shooting.

On March 14, Danyell Morris, a 29-year-old African-American man, and Corey Parks, aka Corey Parker, a 36-year-old African-American man, were found not guilty on all charges in the murder of Joseph Taylor, a 28-year-old African-American man. Taylor was shot in the head on Nov. 3, 2009, and found in a car in the 1300 block of West Fayette Street.
