WEDNESDAY: The Moombahton Massive takes over U-Street Music Hall with the postgenre genre’s originator Dave Nada’s project Nadastrom, Sabo, Bro Safari, and Pickster One. Kinda confounding metal/punk/other band Jucifer plays Sonar with Fortress, Harlequin Ichthyosis, and Radical Discharge. Dar Stellabotta brings her blend of hip-hop, folk, and punk (“Darstyle”) to the Sidebar with the Brown FISH’s Jahiti.
THURSDAY: Baltimore reggae regulars the Evokatones might just do some skankin’ at the Ottobar with the Players; upstairs, punk-plus DJ night Terminal Love returns. DJs Cliffstarr and Anchor and hosts Ambush and Penthouse helm this month’s Welcome 2 the Court hip-hop mixer event at Soar. Vlonde, aka Chris Day of the band Witch Hat, makes post-ambient synthscapes at the Metro Gallery for the BOUM closing party with Bamboo and Nest. Jimmy Ha Ha—you know Jimmy Ha Ha—hosts the “Ha Ha Night of Acoustic Jams and Comedy” at the 8X10 with Adverse Reaction, Nelly’s Echo, and more. Pianist Olga Kern guests with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for a program centered around Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Maine folk duo the Squid Jiggers perform at Sykesville’s Baldwin’s Station. Don’t miss: The MANTRA Percussion Ensemble does Michael Gordon’s Timber for six simantras—basically, pieces of wood as percussive instruments—to delirious effect at 2640 Space.
FRIDAY: The Ottobar splits into two dance parties: downstairs, the Girls Rule! all-female artist/vocalist pop party takes over, while upstairs, Physical Education goes somewhat harder with DJs James Nasty and Antonio Harper. Part Death makes part-death-metal thrash metal at Sonar. Baltimore heavy-psych band Bad Liquor Pond, celebrating an album release, sticks to rail at Sonar with the Flying Eyes and the Slow Jerks. Lush Farm brings its sharp-enough groove-aware indie-rock take to the Metro Gallery with Asexual Woods, Victims of Experience, and Orange Horse. Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Zvoov marries postrock to postjazz at the Sidebar with Time Columns, Troops of Echoes, and the Deaf Scene. Chamber saxophonist Jeremiah Baker unleashes his Inner Demon (a composition) at An die Musik. Singer/songwriter Garrett Anderson celebrates a record release at the 8X10 with 3 Fifths. Four Hours of Funk returns to the Windup Space for breaks/funk/future-funk sweaty good-times. The painful-to-type Schlongtasm: 29 mini-fest takes over Joe Squared courtesy of Airaid Records, with Easy, Cowboy; El Sledge (+); Jason and the Butchers; and OHO. Baltimore’s Bad Biology makes good noise-rock at Charm City Art Space with Tideland, Fire Bison, Unfair Roots, Christopher Nobody and the Nothing, and Sinclair.
SATURDAY: Ozomatli makes world-fusion music for the cools at 9:30 Club. A well-aged and reunited Dru Hill perform at Rams Head Live with Sisqo, who may or may not unleash the dragon, and Black Angel Down. If the Sidebar has a “crew” of Sidebar bands, it might look a little something like tonight: S1ngleton, MisEuphoria, Save the Empire, A Life Less Ordinary, and Matt Pless. World Jazz Band Veronneau is, indeed, all in a name at An die Musik. A band called Hangdog takes its “influences in rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, bluegrass, and even a touch of punk and country” to the 8X10. The Red Room at Normal’s Books and Records does something a little different with tonight’s Subtle Bodies program of “diffuse,” quiet music from the trios of Andrew Hayleck, Paul Neidhardt, and Tyler Wilcox and Bonnie Jones, Kristian Weeks, and John Berndt. Victory Records alt-grunge band Taproot plays Towson’s Recher Theatre. Don’t miss: Erstwhile Baltimorean Cass McCombs makes another swing through town at the Ottobar with Frank Fairfield and Walker and Jay. The A389 Records anniversary bash takes over Sonar with an all-room, gonna-sell-out heavy music droolfest including luminaries Eyehategod, Integrity, Gehenna, Pulling Teeth, Magrundergrind, and lots and lots more.
SUNDAY: There Where’s the Band? Tour takes over the Ottobar with a collection of various dudes—such as Chris Conley and Matt Pryor—from Saves the Day, Bayside, the Get Up Kids, and more. Piano virtuoso Matthew Odell performs at An die Musik. Sabrina Chap brings her “cabaret burlesque Americana” to the Windup Space with banjo player/yodeler Curtis Eller. Don’t miss: The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra does Richard Strauss’ tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra—popularized via 2001: A Space Odyssey—at the Meyerhoff.
MONDAY: Gardening Not Architecture makes “soundtracky stuff” at the Ottobar with the Baby Grand. DJ James Nasty keeps Monday interesting at Joe Squared Power Plant.
TUESDAY: Detroit pop-rock-hair outfit Rocky Loves Emily plays the Ottobar. Roots hero Steve Earle performs solo at the way-small Rams Head Tavern in Annapolis. Brent Madsen, Dan Ryan, John Dierker, Mike Kuhl, and Mike Ross go into the Out of Your Head new-music collider at the Windup Space. Landis Expandis and DJ Napspace’s Dig weekly returns to Joe Squared. Scottie B spins old-school hip-hop at Joe Squared Power Plant.
WEDNESDAY: DJs King Gilbert and Megan helm the Won’t Get Fooled Again omni-rock party late-night at the Ottobar.
