Wandering Eye: The app fad reaches peak stupid, the effects of Hobby Lobby, and juking stats in Chicago
Welp, the app fad has reached peak stupid. Online Health News counts two separate smartphone apps that monitor and tally how many times you check your smartphone, apparently with the goal of "creating mindfulness" about how addicted you are to whatever other apps have swallowed your attention: "The newest one, Checky, is a simple application that tells users how many times they've checked their phone today, and maps out where they've checked it throughout the day. Another app, Moment, gives the amount of time the user has spent on his or her phone instead. While Checky is free, Moment is $4.99, but Moment does deliver some kind of an intervention, not just tracking: the app can alert you after you've spent a preset amount of time using your phone." Tech critic Evengy Morozov summed it up in a tweet with about 126 characters to spare: "Stupidity goes meta!" But we still wonder, does the app count the times you check the app? (Edward Ericson Jr.)

Summer: It's What's Wrong with America

Many people ask me, “Why is summer such a problem this time of year?” To them I say: “Because summer is guilty, and it knows it is guilty. Which is the worst, because summer knows precisely what it's up to and refuses to change.”...
