  • UPDATE: CSX train collision with commercial truck caused derailment, explosion

[caption id="attachment_16775" align="alignleft" width="225"] Photo by Noah Scialom[/caption] A CSX freight train collided with a tractor trailer truck Tuesday afternoon, derailing the 15 car train, which, according to CSX, was carrying sodium chlorate, lumber, and printing paper. The derailment was followed by a massive explosion that could be felt as far away as Canton (videos of the explosion can be seen here and here , with NSFW language). Residents within a 20-block radius around the explosion have been evacuated. Windows and light fixtures were reportedly blown out in the areas near the explosion. Pulaski Highway is closed between Moravia Road and Chesaco St. The driver of the truck is at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in serious but stable condition, says County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. Both people aboard the train are reported by officials to be safe. No other injuries have been reported. City Paper initially repeated Baltimore County Police and Fire Department Twitter feed reports that buildings had collapsed, though it now appears that is not the case. Police scanners indicate that Baltimore City is sending Hazmat units to aid in the containment of the scene and police are working to secure the area near the track.
