Blue Notes: Top 10 in Jazz and Blues
The jazz story of 2014 was the emergence of long-underrated saxophonist Mark Turner. After brilliant contributions to the Billy Hart Quartet, the cooperative trio Fly, and many others, Turner released his first solo album in 13 years in 2014. “Lathe of Heaven” recalls a younger Wayne Shorter in the inventiveness of its composition and high feeling of its playing. Turner also made contributions to splendid 2014 albums by Hart, Jochen Rueckert, and Stefano Bollani. Meanwhile, Turner’s Fly bandmate Jeff Ballard released his own remarkable trio album with Lionel Louecke and Miguel Zenon. The 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” in 2013 inspired two important jazz responses in 2014: the Bad Plus’ interpretation of the ballet, released as a CD, and Vijay Iyer’s soundtrack for the “Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi” DVD. Here in Baltimore, Lafayette Gilchrist and the New Volcanoes finally released a welcome document of Gilchrist’s groundbreaking “The Go-Go Suite.” (Geoffrey Himes)

Thomas Stanley's new book 'The Execution of Sun Ra' blasts off with free jazz philosopher
I’ve been pondering the words “It’s after the end of the world, don’t you know that yet?” since I first heard them echo out of the planetary weirdness of Sun Ra’s ‘Space Is the Place’ 20-some odd years ago....
