"Hip in Hampden" is the motto of Baltimore's latest drinkery, 13.5% Wine Bar (1117 W. 36th St., 889-1064), which opened July 10, bringing the bar-as-lounge concept to 36th Street. A peek inside revealed that this is not your neighborhood tappie, unless you know of another area bar with leather sofas, bubble chairs, orange bar stools, and a wall of wine.
Wine drinkers will be pleased that owner Wayne Laing (former proprietor of the Wine Underground) promises a minimum of 30 wines by the glass (plus beer and liquor), and retail bottle sales to take home or consume on premises for an additional $8 corkage fee. 13.5%'s small menu offers a revolving selection of salads, paninis, and casual dishes, all under $10, though "we're not trying to be a restaurant," Laing stresses.
13.5% Wine Bar is open 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., with kitchen service until 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 8 p.m. Sundays. Closed Mondays.
