Wizards’ Beal staying positive about wrist injury
Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal spoke publicly about his fractured wrist for the first time Tuesday, a few hours before the team announced that it had exercised the fourth-year option on his contract. Beal, though he called it “frustrating,” said he does not expect the injury to hinder his shooting accuracy because it is his nonshooting wrist. “I’m not really worried about getting my touch back,” he said. “It’ll definitely have to come. It’s probably like starting all over again. I’m pretty sure I’ll have some type of strength left in my wrist. But I definitely know I have to develop it and it has to take some time, of course, so I’m not really rushing.”

Mike Flacco, Joe’s brother, joins Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed tight end Mike Flacco, brother of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, according to a source. Mike Flacco went undrafted this year after being selected as a Division II third-team All-American in his first season playing football at New Haven, where the 6-foot-5, 245-pound player finished the season with 30 catches for 591 yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games. Flacco, 27, had spent time this year with the San Diego Chargers but was cut in late August. Last year marked the first time he played football since high school. Flacco played minor league baseball but ended his career in April 2013 and was placed on the voluntarily retired list by the Boston Red Sox. He had been traded to Boston from the Orioles that March. In 2009, the Orioles drafted him in the 31st round out of CCBC-Catonsville.

Ravens: Joe Flacco has been nominated for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for his performance in the team’s 48-17 win Sunday over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (306 yards, five touchdowns, 146.0 passer rating). If he wins, FedEx will make a $2,000 donation to Baltimore’s local chapter of the American Red Cross. Fans can vote at NFL.com/FedEx.
More NFL: Former Ravens wide receiver Gerrard Sheppard (Towson, McDonogh) is working out for the Washington Redskins today, according to a league source. Sheppard was claimed off waivers this year by the Green Bay Packers after being cut by the Ravens, but he was subsequently released.

Major League Soccer: Luis Silva, D.C. United’s leading scorer, will be out four to six weeks after straining his right hamstring in the first half of Sunday’s 3-1 victory at Houston. He will miss the last two regular-season matches and the two-game Eastern Conference semifinals, which begin Nov. 1-2.

Running: A 5K run-walk will be held in honor of the late Bel Air High School boys varsity lacrosse coachJohn “Scoop” Kelly II on Oct. 26 at Harford Community College. The event will raise money for scholarships students at the school. … The inaugural Military Bowl 5K will be held in Annapolis on Dec. 27. Runners will start at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and follow a course that goes to downtown Annapolis and back. Women’s college soccer: Navy senior Jade Seabrook was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, and teammate Clare MacAdam was named Rookie of the Week.
Men’s college soccer: Navy juniors Jamie Dubyoski (Loyola Blakefield) and Jackson Morgan were named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.
Women’s college volleyball: Navy sophomore Gaby Smith was named Patriot League Player of the Week.
Men’s college golf: Maryland finished first at the Terrapin Invitational at Woodmont Country Club with a team score of 4-over 868, five strokes better than second-place Loyola Maryland. Navy combined for a score of 902 to finish sixth. Maryland freshman David Kocher and Loyola sophomore Matt Oshrine(Pikesville) tied for third individually with a 1-over 217 over three rounds.
