Hokies’ Fuller, Terps’ Likely ranked among NCAA’s top defensive backs

Virginia Tech’s Kendall Fuller and Maryland’s Will Likely were listed among NFL.com’s 10 college defensive backs to watch this season. Fuller, a Baltimore native, is No. 3 overall on the rankings of draft analyst Lance Zierlein, who wrote that the rising junior “loves to make plays, which is why he’s more than willing to feast on unsuspecting quarterbacks. Fuller has terrific start/stop quickness, which is what makes him such a ballhawk on short and intermediate throws, and coaches love that he almost never leaves the field.” Likely, also a rising junior, is No.7 and “quicker than fast as a cornerback, but has exceptional instincts and ball skills and uses his waterbug burst to jump passes anywhere near him.”

More: Morgan State running backs coach Ken Lucas has been promoted to assistant head coach. “Coach Lucas has done a fantastic job in his first year,” head coach Lee Hull said in a statement. “His experience as a college coach and head coach in high school brings a wealth of knowledge to our program.” Morgan State’s ground attack flourished in 2014 and helped lead the Bears to their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship since 1979, including their first appearance in the NCAA Division I playoffs. The Bears completed the season ranked second in the MEAC with 208.5 rushing yards per game.

Caps goalie Holtby files for player-elected arbitration

Goaltender Braden Holtby filed for player-elected arbitration before Sunday’s 5 p.m. deadline, joining forward Marcus Johansson as those Washington Capitals seeking contract mediation, his agent said in a text message. The Capitals had extended Holtby a deal general manager Brian MacLellan described at the NHL draft as “a good offer” and “competitive,” expressing belief it would be finalized shortly. Both sides had been interested in a long-term contract of at least five years, but had differing opinions on the money. It is believed Washington’s initial offer topped $5 million. The majority of NHL arbitration cases get settled before the hearings, leaving the door wide open for an agreement before the case gets heard. But if Washington and Holtby cannot agree on a new deal before an arbitration ruling comes down, he would sign either a one- or two-year extension, at the Capitals’ choosing in their pre-hearing brief. Holtby, who finished fourth in Vezina Trophy voting last season, tied club records for games, wins and shutouts.

More NHL: The Capitals and forward Evgeny Kuznetsov are working on a contract extension for between two and three years, according to the second-line center’s agent. “I think we have a good dialogue,” Maxim Molliver said Sunday afternoon. Washington had extended a qualifying offer to Kuznetsov worth at least $945,000, or 105 percent of his previous salary. The 23-year-old had 37 points during his first full NHL season and grew into a reliable two-way anchor by the playoffs.
