Defenseman Mike Green signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, according to reports, formally closing the door on his tenure with the Washington Capitals. Green, a first-round draft pick of the Capitals in 2004 and a two-time runner-up for the Norris Trophy, which honors the league’s best defenseman, has spent his entire career with Washington, amassing 113 goals and 247 assists in 575 games. He is the second-highest-scoring defenseman in the NHL over the past eight seasons. He had 10 goals and 35 assists last season. The Capitals re-signed right wing Stanislav Galiev to a two-year contract, signed defenseman Taylor Chorney to a one-year contract and forwards Carter Camper and Sean Collins and defenseman Mike Moore and Aaron Ness to one-year, two-way contracts.

Loyola alumnus Euker to coach McDaniel lax
McDaniel hired Baltimore native Keith Euker as men’s lacrosse coach. Euker spent the past two seasons as the top assistant at Denison, where the Big Red was 32-5. Before that, Euker spent two years as head coach at Missouri of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association, then two years as goalie coach at Michigan. Euker was a first-team All-Metro selection as a senior at Loyola Blakefield before playing at then-Loyola College from 1995 to 1998, where, as a senior, he helped the Greyhounds to a No. 1 national ranking and NCAA semifinal appearance.
Men’s basketball: Frankie Allen has returned to UMBC to serve as an assistant coach. Allen was with the Retrievers from 2006 to 2008, and was a part of the coaching staff that led UMBC to the 2007-08 America East title and NCAA tournament. He was head coach at UMES from 2008 to 2014 and has spent 24 seasons as a head coach overall.
Women’s track and field: Morgan State freshman high jumper Jailah Mason finished third at the USATF Junior Championships on Saturday in Eugene, Ore., with a mark of 5 feet 10 inches.

Pierce leaves Wizards for Clippers
The Washington Wizards were on the phone with free-agent forward Paul Pierce right after midnight and made an offer to keep the all-but-certain future Hall of Famer, but the forward has signed a three-year deal worth approximately $10.5 million contract to finish his career with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Wizards offered Pierce $6.6 million next season along with a team option for a second year.. Among other free agents the Wizards reached out to were Indiana Pacers combo guard Rodney Stuckey, Sacramento Kings forward Derrick Williams, Brooklyn Nets swingman Alan Anderson and Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Wayne Ellington, according to people familiar with the situation.

Youth soccer: The Fewster FC U-15 boys won the 2015 US Youth Soccer Region 1 Championship by defeating the Dix Hills (N.Y.) Hurricanes, 3-1, in Barboursville, W.Va. The team defeated reigning champion Arlington (Va.) SC, in the semifinals, 2-1. The three-time Maryland state champions, led by Archbishop Curley coach Barry Stitz, advance to the USYSA National Championships on July 21-26 in Tulsa, Okla.

Major League Lacrosse: The Chesapeake Bayhawks (5-5) return home for the first time in nearly a month tonight to play the first-place New York Lizards (8-2). Game time at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is 7:30.
Major League Baseball: The Toronto Blue Jays activated second baseman Steve Tolleson, a former Oriole, from the 15-day disabled list and designated him for assignment. He had been out since May 26 with a strained groin.
