Epps (Coppin State) wins triple jump at USA Track and Field Championships

Christina Epps (Coppin State) won the triple jump at the USA Track and Field Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field on Friday night by posting a personal-best mark of 46 feet, 2.75 inches. “It actually hasn’t sunk in yet,” Epps said. “It feels so unreal. I was going through my victory lap yesterday like I can’t believe this is happening right now. I am extremely humbled and honored.” April Sinkler was second (45 feet, 4.5 inches). Epps still must reach the “A” qualifying standard of 46 feet, 7.25 inches that would assure her a trip to the World Championships, held Aug. 22-30 in Beijing. … Maryland’s Peyton Wade finished fourth in the junior division of the heptathlon at the USA Track and Field Championships. … Morgan State’s Shenel Crooke won the 100-meter dash at the St. Kitts & Nevis National Championship with a personal-best time of 11.48 seconds this month. Crooke’s time qualified her for next month’s Senior Pan American Games, held July 20-26 in Toronto.

NHL: The Washington Capitals re-signed center Jay Beagle to a three-year, $5.25 million contract. Beagle, 29, set career highs in goals (10), assists (10) and points (20) in 2014-15 and tied his career high in games played (62).

Soccer: The U.S. men’s national team will play a friendly against Peru on Sept. 4 at RFK Stadium. A formal announcement is expected this week. The U.S. Soccer Federation also talked to Ghana and Uruguay before reaching terms with Peru. The Sept. 4 date is the first of two home friendlies for the Americans in early September. No specific details are available about the second game.

Wheelchair racing: Clarksville resident Tatyana McFadden finished first in the women’s 100-meter T54, 200-meter T54, 400-meter T54, 800-meter T54, and 1,500- and 5,000-meter T53/54 at the Indy International in Colorado Springs, Colo., this past weekend.

Maryland baseball: The Tampa Bay Rays signed third-round pick Brandon Lowe (Maryland). Each of the Terps‘ program-record eight players taken in the MLB Draft now has signed a professional contract. … Shortstop Kevin Smith was named a second-team Freshman All-American by D1Baseball.com. Smith started 65 games, primarily at shortstop, batting .273 with 55 runs, 35 RBIs and seven home runs.

Varsity boys lacrosse: Al Hernandez has been named coach at Glenelg Country, taking over for Risto Worthington. Hernandez, who was a team captain at UMBC, lives in Ellicott City and previously was the defensive coordinator for Mount Saint Joseph. He also coached at River Hill from 2012 to 2013.

Girls basketball: Bill McClintock, who played on California’s 1959 NCAA championship team and 1960 second-place NCAA basketball teams, will bring his Frontline Basketball Camp to Coppin State on July 30-31 for college women and class of 2015 high school graduates, and Aug. 1-2 for high school and junior high-/middle school girls.
