In his fourth year as coach, Sowell led the team to its first share of a Patriot League regular-season title since 2008 and its first No. 1 seed in the conference tournament since 2007.

State women: Loyola Maryland nearly swept the Patriot League end-of-year awards, with senior Annie Thomas (offensive), senior Taryn VanThof (midfielder) and sophomore Maddy Lesher (defensive) receiving player-of -the-year honors. All three were named first-team All-Patriot League, joining Greyhounds senior Hannah Schmitt and Navy seniors Loren Generi and Sarah George and freshman Jenna Collins. Annapolis sailor Breymaier helps set world record
Ryan Breymaier, who was raised in Annapolis and sailed in college for St. Mary’s College, broke the world speed record for sailing from Newport, R.I., to Bermuda. With co-skipper Renaud Laplanche and the crew of the 105-foot trimaran Lending Club 2, Breymaier covered the 635-nautical-mile course in 23 hours, 9 minutes, 52 seconds, at an average speed of 27 knots. “We’re thrilled with the record we set today,” said Breymaier, a member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club. “It’s fantastic to have the wind at our back as we head to the Transpac,” a 2,000-plus-nautical-mile race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
College baseball: Navy junior Luke Gillingham was named a Louisville Slugger Player of the Week and Patriot League Pitcher of the Week. The left-hander recorded his third shutout of the year in at Lehigh on Saturday. … Maryland sophomore Mike Shawaryn was honored as Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. He struck out 13 batters in eight shutout innings Friday against Cal State Fullerton to move to 9-0 in 10 starts.
College softball: McDaniel junior Marty Windisch (Manchester Valley) was chosen as Centennial Conference Player of the Week.
College wrestling: Maryland redshirt freshman Justin Alexander, who was accused of assaulting a woman and trying to take her from her State College, Pa., apartment building last week, has been suspended indefinitely for violating the school’s student-athlete code of conduct, a team spokesman said.
