Hampton knocks Morgan State men out of MEAC basketball tournament, 91-71

Reginald Johnson and Deron Powers scored 18 points apiece, and sixth-seeded Hampton beat 11th-seeded Morgan State on Monday in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament, 91-71. Brian Darden added 15 points for Hampton (13-17) in Norfolk, Va. Johnson, Powers and Darden made seven free throws apiece as the Pirates hit 26 of 36. Hampton ended the first half on a 9-3 run for a 37-32 lead. The Bears got within 57-53 after two free throws by Cedric Blossom with 9:32 left. But Hampton answered with a 14-4 run, with seven points by Johnson, for a 71-57 advantage. Morgan State (7-24), which reached the MEAC championship game last season, lost its sixth straight game. Blake Bozeman had 19 points, Torin Childs-Harris added 18, and Blossom finished with 14 with 12 rebounds for the Bears.

Indoor soccer: Blast goalkeeper William Vanzela and defender Pat Healey (Calvert Hall, Towson University) were named first-team All-Major Arena Soccer League on Monday. Vanzela posted a record 2.83 goals-against average and recorded four shutouts in the regular season. Healey led the Blast (18-2) with 22 assists while adding seven goals and a league-leading 53 blocked shots.

Women’s college basketball: Top-seeded American (23-8) held fifth-seeded Navy (17-14) to 39 percent shooting on its way to a 60-53 victory in their Patriot League tournament semifinal matchup, ending the Midshipmen’s season.

Men’s college lacrosse: Maryland senior defender Casey Ikeda was named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Ikeda helped the Terps hold Princeton to just four goals in an 11-4 victory Saturday, finishing with a ground ball, a caused turnover and an assist. … Gettysburg senior attackman Robby Maddux (St. Paul’s) received Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Women’s college lacrosse: Maryland junior midfielder Taylor Cummings (McDonogh) was honored as Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. In two wins last week, Cummings had 12 points., including six goals and an assist in a victory Saturday over Syracuse. … Navy senior attacker Loren Generi was chosen as Patriot League Midfield Player of the Week for the fourth straight time. … Mount St. Mary’s sophomore midfielder Kelly Maloney (River Hill) was named Northeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She’s the first Mountaineers player to earn a weekly league award this season.

College baseball: No. 25 Maryland will be featured four times on the Big Ten Network this season. The first two broadcasts will be the Terps‘ April 3 and April 5 games against visiting Nebraska. BTN also will show Maryland’s nonconference matchup with Cal State Fullerton on April 17 and its May 3 game against reigning Big Ten champion Indiana. Also, because of poor field conditions, Maryland’s home game Wednesday against Richmond has been moved to Harford Community College, with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
