UMBC, Mount St. Mary’s women fall in conference basketball tournaments

UMBC shot 16 percent in the first half of its America East Conference tournament semifinal matchup against second-seeded Albany (23-8) and could not recover in a season-ending 66-37 loss at Binghamton. The sixth-seeded Retrievers (12-19) were led by 11 points from junior guard Liz McNaughton.

More: Seventh-seeded Mount St. Mary’s could not overcome a slow start, falling to second-seeded Bryant, 76-54, in the Northeast Conference tournament quarterfinals at Bryant’s Chace Athletic Center. In her final college game, senior Jenn Carney scored a team-best 18 points for the Mountaineers (8-22). The Bulldogs improved to 22-8. … Morgan State senior guard Tracey Carrington (Dundalk) was named to the All-MEAC second team. The third team included UMES senior guard Jessica Long and UMES redshirt junior forward Alexis Udoji, the Defensive Player of the Year. The rookie team included Morgan State freshman guard Braennan Farrar, Coppin State redshirt freshman guard Genesis Lucas and UMES redshirt freshman guard Moengaroa Subritzky. … UMBC junior guard Capree Garner was named second-team All-America East Conference. Sophomore guard Taylor McCarley made the third team. … McDaniel junior guard Lindsey Nichols was named Centennial Conference Player of the Year. Teammate Steph Perez, a senior guard, was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the Green Terror’s Becky Martin was Coach of the Year. Nichols was named to the All-Centennial first team and Perez made the second team, which also included Johns Hopkins junior guard Katie Clark and Blue Jays junior guard Beatriz Williams. Receiving honorable mention were Washington College senior guard Emily Hubley, Hopkins senior forward Haley Bush, McDaniel junior guard Brittney Davis (St. Vincent Pallotti), Hopkins junior guard Liz Tommasi and Gettysburg freshman forward Emily Gibbons (Severn).

Stevenson beats Arcadia for second straight ECAC title

With an 83-73 victory over fifth-seeded Arcadia at Bethany College, second-seeded Stevenson won its second straight Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Championship. It was the third win for the Mustangs (21-9) over the Knights (16-13) this season. Junior Erik Fisher (Archbishop Spalding) scored a game-high 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting from the field to lead Stevenson to the win, while senior Justin Kuntz posted a doubledouble (18 points and 13 rebounds). The Mustangs shot 52 percent overall from the field and 54 percent from 3-point range.

More: Coppin State junior guard-forward Sterling Smith was named second-team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Teammate Taariq Cephas, a senior guard, made the third team, as did North Carolina Central guard-forward Dante Holmes (St. Frances) and two UMES players: senior forward Mike Myers and junior center Dominique Elliott. UMES freshman guard Ryan Andino made the rookie team, and the Hawks’ Bobby Collins was Coach of the Year.

Blast to face Lancers on Wednesday in playoffs

The Blast will face the Rochester Lancers on Wednesday in its Major Arena Soccer League playoff opener. The Syracuse Silver Knights defeated Rochester, 17-6, on Sunday to force a mini game. The Lancers won, 3-2, to advance to the Eastern Division final. If the Blast wins Wednesday, it would face the winner of the Central Division in a home-and-home series beginning Friday in Baltimore.

College baseball: Freshman shortstop Kevin Smith hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to propel No. 20 Maryland past host UNC Wilmington, 11-9, and avoid a series sweep. The Terps (8-4) trailed 6-3 after four innings but used a five-run sixth, highlighted by Smith’s four-run shot, to take control of the game. Senior Bobby Ruse (C.Milton Wright) picked up his third win of the season in relief. On Saturday, the Terps lost both games of their doubleheader. Maryland went back and forth with the Seahawks (9-4) in the opener before losing, 8-6. In the nightcap, UNC Wilmington used a five-run eighth inning to power an 11-7 win.

College wrestling: Maryland redshirt juniors Geoffrey Alexander (133 pounds) and Lou Mascola (157) and senior Spencer Myers (285) earned bids to the NCAA championships after their performances in the Big Ten Conference championships Saturday at Ohio State. Myers won a rematch with Illinois’ Brooks Black to earn a seventh-place finish Sunday. Mascola lost and settled for eighth place.

Horse racing: Laurel Park canceled its live program Sunday because of weather-related problems. Laurel will remain open for simulcast wagering and is scheduled to return to live racing Thursday, with a 12:30p.m. post for the first race. … Jockey Trevor McCarthy, who broke his wrist in an incident at Laurel on Dec. 20, is scheduled to return to riding this week at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. McCarthy earned all three riding titles in Maryland last year and was sixth among leading riders in North America with 263 wins when he went down.
