Americans Matt Centrowitz (Broadneck), Mike Berry, Erik Sowinski and Pat Casey broke the world record in the distance medley relay (legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters) at the Armory Track Invitational on Saturday in New York, clocking 9 minutes, 19.93 seconds — more than six seconds faster than the previous mark, 9:25.97 set by the University of Texas in 2008. Ireland also ran under the world record, finishing in 9:25.37. Centrowitz ran his opening 1,200 leg in 2:49.47, giving his team a 2.58-second lead. Ravens’ Mosley loses out for defensive rookie honor
St. Louis Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald beat out Ravens inside linebacker C.J. Mosley for Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The award was announced during the fourth annual “NFL Honors” show Saturday night. Donald received 25 votes in balloting from a panel of writers and broadcasters, seven more than Mosley. Oakland Raiders outside linebacker Khalil Mack got six votes, and San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Chris Borland received one vote. Mosley led rookies in tackles with 133, seventh overall among all NFL players, and had three sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Donald had 48 tackles and nine sacks, the latter the most among NFL rookies. He also had 17 tackles for loss.

Smash and Grab cruises and wins in allowance race
When nominations close Thursday for the $250,000 General George Handicap (Grade 3), don’t be surprised to see the name Smash and Grab, who cruised to victory in Saturday’s seventh race at Laurel Park. Six runners contested the 7-furlong allowance test, which is the same distance as the Feb. 16 General George, and several had stakes credentials. Smash and Grab went to the front and took a comfortable lead under Xavier Perez. He wasn’t threatened the rest of the way and won the $50,000 race by 51/2 lengths. The winning time for the 5-year-old son of Sharp Honor was 1 minute, 23.10 seconds. “He seemed to love the added distance, and Xavier did a great job,” trainer Damon Dilodovico said. “You always get scared with him because it is not uncommon for him to wait on horses, but that didn’t happen today. The General George is a short turnaround, a little quick for my liking, but the owner [Ronald Cuneo] wants to go. It will all depend how he comes out of the race.” Smash and Grab, who paid $7.40, improved to 7-for-9 at Laurel.

Tracey Carrington (Dundalk) led a foursome of double-digit scorers with 25 points as Morgan State (7-12, 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) won, 77-64, over host Howard (2-19, 2-5) in the Prince Hall Masonic Classic. Other double-figure scorers for the Bears were Braennan Farrar (18points), Lexus Spears (12) and Broadneck graduate Dinah Jones (11).
More Division I games: Visiting Navy (12-9, 6-4 Patriot League) used tough defense to hold host Lafayette (11-10, 4-6) scoreless for the first seven minutes and won, 65-60. The Midshipmen, who never trailed, were led by Sarita Condie‘s17 points. Navy is 5-2 in games decided by six points or fewer. … Army (15-5, 7-3 Patriot) used a 12-2 run in the second half to pull away from host Loyola Maryland (6-15, 4-6) and win, 62-53. Bordick, Meissner added to Babe’s Birthday Bash
The Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation added former Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick and U.S.Olympic figure skater Kimmie Meissner to the lineup for the annual party from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards. Former Atlanta Brave and Falcon Brian Jordan (Milford Mill) will be honored with the Babe Ruth Museum Community Service Award at the event, which will celebrate the 120th anniversary of Ruth’s birth in Baltimore on Feb. 6, 1895. Led by 23 points from Jermaine Edwards (Digital Harbor) and 13 assists from Devin Spencer (St. Mary’s College, Towson Catholic), the Shuckers moved to within one game of the Beltway Bombers (6-2) in the Colonial Division.
