Hi my name is Chris Reber and I am making a short film for the contest. I have a couple of question. Am I aloud to use cuss words? and can I use music that is copyrighted? thanks! Hope to hear from you.

@ploikuanut

We have no prohibitions on cuss words--our pages are filled with 'em.

Using copyrighted music, however, treads on some shaky ground. We suggest you read up on fair use and public domain. This online comic book, "Bound by Law," is a great source:

Do military members stationed in Maryland count as residents?

Does the 5 minutes include credits or can the credits come after the 5 minutes?

Not that I would necessarily have any in my own film, but do you have a policy against nudity?

And do you require text credits in the film, or can it be nothing but the picture from beginning to end?

Thanks!

@jshaivitz

You should make the credits succinct as possible---we're encouraging economy of expression here. On the other hand, we're not going to disqualify a movie if it goes to 5:12 or something.

@vagittarius

No policy against nudity, but if it involves nudity combined with animal love or similar, we'll kick that back. Text credits are helpful, but we suggest keeping to a minimum so as to get the most from your allotted five minutes.

is there some way I can make sure you guys got my films? I dropped them off, but the front desk lady didn't even know a festival was going on! She said she'd relay them to whoever should receive them but I just want to make sure.

P.S. the names of the entries are "pointydressshoes.com" and "NO MILK"

"The Big Scoop" / Directed by Jon Shaivitz

I understood the concept. But it lacked that freshness. It was set for a comedy but it only made me smile. Interesting plot but far too dry.

"Cain and Able" / Directed by Shane Logue

This paid tribute to the silent films of the past. Gotta’ appreciate that….but honestly it wasn’t interesting….I was enjoying the pictures and artwork more then the production.

"Evolution of an Idea" / Directed by Grey Adkins

Okay. Abstract art meets a video camera. This was simply a student thesis film to me. Good for at least a 87 on the final project; however, in a contest I felt it could have been passed on.

"Greed" / Directed by the Kids on the Hill

Good to see the youth doing creative works with a strong message. I def’ understood the concept.

"Lies and Murder" / Directed by Alejandro Orengo

Yup. Curse words, bad editing, bad dialogue, and a gun. You do the math.

"Liturgical Space" / Directed by Isaac Green Diebboll

Great cinematography. Hell what would have happen if everyone did silent cinematography shots…sleepy time.

"One on One" / Directed by Nick Clasing

In no manner of man did I ever think that a piece of WORK like this would have even been in a lineup of “filmmakers”. It was almost an insult for creative people. No creativity….NO NOTHING! Wow.

"Pointydressshoes.com" / Directed by Nathan Meyer

This was a youtube tryout tape that didn’t make it online…guess the city paper contest was the next step.

"Too Late" / Directed by Chris LaMartina

Nice. Animation was cool. Good story. Liked it and wanted to see more.

"Unscripted" / Directed by the Robinson Bros.

This was truly the top film. Simple, unique, fresh…interesting, intense….It opened eyes and demanded respect. I could go on…but why –

To sum it up the event was so interesting…Who ever the judges were really need prayer and a sense of realness…7 of the 10 films in this event should have been left on the Apple and/or PC desktops. The Liturgical Space, Too Late and Untitled were the 3 films that were actually worth the time. Now if those 3 were in competition then it would still be HIGHLY IN THE FAVOR OF “Unscripted”. After seeing the event go how it did last night I know for sure that a majority of Baltimore’s Film society and/or those parties acclaimed at being judges of talented filmmakers have been truly poorly picked and pick poorly. It’s too many politics in Baltimore – No matter on the quality of work you submit it’s 84% depending on who you know well and if they want to see you win.

AND THE WINNER IS “EVOLUTION OF AN IDEA”….funny that the titled speaks for it self…..

Evolution - any process of formation or growth

Idea - any conception existing in the mind as a result of mental understanding, awareness, or activity.

Once you get an idea you act on it and with vision produce a work that is “Unscripted”. But I guess it was “Too Late”…..Because the event already selected its voters. After the event I left feeling like I need liturgical spaces to clear my mind of all the bull$% that I just witnessed.

shut the hell up - "It’s too many politics in Baltimore – No matter on the quality of work you submit it’s 84% depending on who you know well and if they want to see you win." what complex mathematical algorithm did you crunch to come up with that percentage? and they never ever announced who the judges were until the screening, so if no one knew who the judges were than everyone was on their own without the benefit of any help. oh, and liturgical space was the most boring thing ever. you suck dude.
