After a celebrated 40-year photography career, Baltimore native Martha Cooper has spent the last nine years bridging the 8,000-mile gap between southwest Baltimore and the southwestern townships of Johannesburg, South Africa--Sowebo and Soweto. Through mirrored images of residents from both sides of the Atlantic, Cooper sheds light on the similar social and economic conditions that shape the lives of people whose connections, aside from the names of their communities, normally go unnoticed.
